In 1996 Bruce Hopkin, already having twelve years experience in the marine metal fabrication industry, started out on his own building anodized aluminum T-tops for boats in his driveway.
The need for a truck rack came quickly; using the only material he had available he took to designing and building his very first custom truck rack. Everyone in town told him how “cool“his rack looked, and a bunch of the local contractors asked him if he could build them one. Bruce took there compliments with a grain of salt and built them there racks. He then proceeded to invest his energy into his new marine metal fabrication company-Whiteknuckle Welding.
In early 1997, due to the quality of his work, Whiteknuckle Welding started to take off and landed some major production accounts. Bruce moved into a shop and hired some extra help, up to eight people at one time, just to keep up with the demand.
Up to 2001 WhiteKnuckle Welding moved a lot of metal thru its Woodbine location’s door. During that time period the word got out to a whole bunch of other people about the guy in Woodbine who builds those “Custom Truck Racks”.
To keep a tighter reign on quality and overhead Bruce weaned off the majority of his production contracts and concentrated his sight on retail customers. He realized the importance of quality not quantity. He slimmed his crew down and kept only the highest quality craftsmen who enjoyed there job and dotted there i’s and crossed there t’s.
By the end of 2004, with a little help from the internet and a lot of help from word of mouth, Whiteknuckle Welding’s custom truck rack sales have come close to equaling their marine product sales. Inspiring Bruce to start a website strictly devoted to Custom Truck Racks.
